Erena

Odessa's baddest guitarist, Erena plays in Blooming Plum. They had a gig shortly after the Trade Union fire and refused to cancel while the rest of the city was shut down.

Pavel avoids politics, but his tangled "abstract hip-hop" reflected the tension in Kharkiv in May 2014, as everyone awaited war with Russia.

Rustam at his parents' home in Kharkiv, Ukraine. He's built a massive collection of rare Soviet funk and takes great joy in chopping it up at home.

Roadblock

Civilians from around the country set up a pro-Ukraine checkpoint on the outskirts of town. They didn't have official authority to stop anyone, but they claimed to be checking a Russian infiltration. Two days earlier, they claimed someone had thrown a grenade into their checkpoint. They spent their downtime pacing, playing chess, listening to Modern Talking.
