I was so nervous and excited I kinda blacked out most of last night, but the pics prove it true. “I Snuck Off the Slave Ship” premiered at Sundance alongside films by people we SERIOUSLY admire including @terenceetc , @kamasiwashington , @garrettgarrettbradleybradley , @jennnkiru , @bfordyoung . Groundbreaking artists with VISION and something to say. It was amazing to sit with our scrappy crew, reunited since shooting wrapped in ATL in August, and watch this go down. I love and admire these people — @groceryonhome for making it happen, @charlesautumn for capturing it on film, @jddavenport for her forensic investigation of what we brought back, and @colbiedopeaf for guiding us through Atlanta. Most of all there is so much love and gratitude for my creative and life partner @b.nugs , brilliant and kind, who can build an idea into an image with her heart and mind at once. Once again we are in awe of @lonnieholleysuniverse , our guide and leader on this project. His Q&A went cosmic and returned. “I wasn’t really thinking of the audience watching it,” he said, “i was thinking of people 50,000 years from now pulling up the digital file and saying ‘This is what Lonnie Holley did.’” This is what Lonnie Holley did... #sundancefilmfestival @sundanceorg #newfrontiers
Tuesday nite music at an Irish pub in Tennessee
“Employees must carve Slayer into forearms before returning to work.” Punk bars and gas station bathrooms across america.
New Orleans tonight, 7p at Domino Sound Record Shack #mississippirecords via @lismonise
Favorite show of the tour so far at Albuquerque’s Center for Peace and Justice (last two pics), a full house of passionate people who work for the world on a local level. And afterward an honest conversation about race, representation, and social justice in this weird work of releasing music you didn’t make and don’t own. The highlight was meeting a 95-year-old woman with a strong handshake and red lipstick. “Could you hear?” “I can never hear!” she yelled with a smile. #Marfa tonight... #mississippirecords
A huge thank you to @norientsounds for the Swiss premiere of our film OULAYA’S WEDDING, alongside music documentaries like @miadocumentary (must see) and Bamseom Pirates Seoul Inferno (a film that I really want to catch). Thank you to @sublime_frequencies for the collaboration and my love @b.nugs for representing the film at the fest with her usual grace, style, and thoughtfulness. Wish I could be there!! #norientmusikfilmfestival
Phoenix AZ, late cause of LA’s traffic and our own incompetence with time zones, but people were still kind and enthusiastic about the show. Then we had the best tacos in an empty stall by a truck stop. @valleybarphx Tucson tonight!
Turned 32 in Los Angeles today and met two very cool people in slightly different contexts — baby KiKi and the great @afrikanspaceprogram , who got a test press of @bodikhuu1vs100 ‘s upcoming record. #iranianbabies #mongolianhiphop #spacebasedproducers
Thanks to everyone who came out to @zebulonla last night! It’s strange and beautiful to relive this footage from Mongolia and other parts of the world with a roomful of new people and imagine what they see. Everything made so much better by the chance to meet my lovely beautiful baby cousin child KiKi! Good job @ralipour and @rlmassoumi (honorable mention to @samalipour for being a good uncle).
#mississippirecords on tour. Thanks to the kind and enthusiastic crowd at our first show at @nwfilmforum in Seattle (sold out!). Oakland tonight and SF tomorrow...
Maybe the Portland gloom evokes nostalgia. I haven’t spent much time here but the city is disproportionately full of feeling. I even noticed a slight tug while walking into a Kinkos on a nondescript commercial street. “Ah, it was here that I made the first Olima Anditi demo cover artwork, and there a crust punk almost murdered me for mistaking his zine-in-progress for a pile of scraps.” We made covers for a Mississippi Recs 15 yr anniversary tape for the road, and even though it involved xeroxing a single piece of paper 200x for too much money, it felt momentous! I gotta get outta here. Join us in Seattle tonight at @nwfilmforum !
Marshall Allen is 94! A hero. Spent the day in a used car lot then brought a baritone sax stand over for @sunraarkestra Toyota of Beaverton vs Myth Science Arkestra.
