I've loved Khun Narin's Electric Phin Band for a couple years -- before I knew what they were called or where they lived, or what they were about. I'd just seen this insane video on YouTube and dreamed of one day meeting the dudes in the motorcycle aprons with the double-headed phins and marching drums and massive homemade sound system.
Somehow, that happened. We met Edouard, a mustachioed young French guy who spent the past 4 years in isolated northern Thialand working on a PhD about obscure musics, on a pre-determined corner in Bangkok last week. He led us up north to the band.
We spent three days jamming, talking, consuming squid and noodles and unending shots of Thai whiskey, and recording some of the greatest moments of music I've had the privilege of witnessing. These guys are a band in the truest sense -- a gang of dudes bound by place and time who can't help but shred no matter the physical conditions. It's a glorious thing. Video coming soon. For now, a quick little preview (above).
On the way to Cambodia now for more music...
