Dozze na Zealous at Total Vibez / by Cyrus

A brief respite from the “Christmas in Nairobi” series (below) for some Raw Music. Here’s a clip from Total Vibez Studio in “Police Dog Estate,” where we’ve been kicking it for the past two days with Dozze and Zealous. They make a strong claim for Kisumu’s hardest rappers, and this clip shows them at work on a new track. They call out “kapooka rappers,” who just “spit pang’ang’a (bullshit) over boom boom beats.” We also had the privilege of meeting Miss Unique, Kisumu’s best (and possibly only) female rapper/singer/human resources employee/clothing designer. Now Ozzy and I are back at Kondele headquarters, having a late night smoke, listening to the only pure reggae radio station in Africa, and planning the next power moves. We’re working on securing a skateboard and large piece of wood for our improvised video dolly, scouting locations for a Dozze na Zealous music video (the "na" is Swahili for "and," not a spelling error), and finalizing plans to record Dishon Olima (the old Luo blues musician from the first week) live at his home. A loud cheer just went up down the street, meaning either Manchester United scored a goal in their current game or there is a tribal riot going on. Onward...
